Modern Blue Licks Hero Recognized
By: Charles Hayes
William J. “Butch” Alexander Jr. was formally recognized Saturday evening, August 16, 2008 at Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park as a man who embodies “Pioneer Spirit.” Butch received the first Butch Alexander Pioneer Spirit Award. Butch has participated in the re-enactment for over 25 years. His participation includes helping choreograph the battle re-enactment, instructing new participants on their roles, and working with park management. His high degree of leadership, willingness to take whatever steps become necessary to have a successful re-enactment and knowledge led park management to recognize him by naming the award after him.. When congratulated on receiving the award and being told that someone would receive annually, Butch responded, “There are a lot of good people out there who deserve it.” Butch is an avid reader of Kentucky history and was a daily presence at the recent archeological work at the park. He has been a participant at the park for over 25 years. Fellow re-enactors agree that Butch is deserving of the award and old timers see the amount of work he did for the recognition.
